How Polio Affects the Skeletal System
When the polio virus enters the body it immediately attacks the
nervous system, followed by the muscular system. The muscular system is what
gives the skeletal system the ability to move. Thus, when the muscular system
gets infected the skeletal system no longer has the power to move the body to
where it wants to go. This is known as paralysis.
Bone deformities such as scoliosis and fatigue can occur when
the body is contaminated with the polio virus. Scoliosis is when the spine is
extremely curved, some people with scoliosis have spines that look like the
letter C or S. Fatigue is extreme weariness and exhaustion, in this scenario the
skeletal system just gives out and stops supporting the body the way it
should.
Polio is a disease that gradually gets worse for not only the
skeletal system, but many other organ systems and if not treated as soon as
possible, it could potentially lead to death.
